Favourites of 2010 | Albums

Looking at some “best of” lists this year, it seems as though some feel that 2010 hasn’t been spectacular for music. Personally, I feel that it has been a really strong year that yielded some albums that will be in my “favourites” section for years to come. I had a tough time, but here are my favourite 15 albums of 2010. I’m still a little iffy on the ordering, save for #1-3, and had difficulty narrowing it down to my top 15, so I’ve included honourable mentions at the bottom!

MUSINGS | On Year-End Lists

With every single blog, publication, radio station, or music fan putting out their “Best of 2010″ lists, I just thought I should preface mine with a little musing on the idea of these year-end lists.

There are always going to be those that disagree with certain lists or even completely agree with them (however rare that is), but the most important thing to keep in mind (in my opinion) is that these lists are subjective. In the spirit of that, I’ve decided to name my list: “Favourites of 2010.”

Of course, there is always that objective line between universally “good” or “bad” music, just like how we can all agree that someone is talented even though their talent might not exactly be “your thing.” But it’s always strange to me how the “best” music is never in the top 40. I mean, what does that say about the state of mainstream music today? (But that’s really a whole other matter.) What I’m trying to say is that no single track or album will make two people feel the exact same way. There may be memories tied to a song, or the melody may evoke certain feelings, or the lyrics may be more relatable for you than someone else.

When it really comes down to it, it’s all a matter of taste, preference, and even personal connections to albums. Of course, I’m always open to other perspectives on this matter, and I’d love to hear what you think. So feel free to comment below and tell me what elements you think makes an album worth falling into the “best of” category.

When I was thinking which albums I should include on my personal list, I considered a number of different things: how the album made me feel, the lyrics, the production, musicality, etc. Also, people also have personal preferences in regards to genre and overall sound. I have a personal leaning towards either atmospheric production or more sparse production and intricate lyrics that make me think, so my personal favourite albums of 2010 will no doubt reflect that.

I think SPIN’s year-end list title, “The Music That Moved Us Most,” says it best. Making “best of” lists, to me, is really a chance to reflect on the year’s albums and remember how they moved you and if they still do. It’s a record, a keepsake for yourself, that just happens to be on display for others to see (if you decide to post your list).

So folks, the upcoming post will feature my personal favourite albums of 2010. They’re the ones I’ve had on repeat; the ones that made me stop in my tracks and listen (really listen); the ones that made me think; the ones that made me feel.
